12th March 2011
Eagles 4 City 2
Match Report by Mark Jennings
For some games you wish you had a camcorder handy to capture the game and this was one of those games!!
Four sublime goals by the Eagles secured this latest win in the campaign to achieve a possible double this season having already secured a place in the cup final.
City Church have been an improving side of late and their having beaten Ashford Baptist 6-0 recently against whom Eagles only managed a draw, some nerves were felt in the changing room.
Nerves were settled as early as the 10th minute though with probably the most ‘Barcelonesk’ move of the game by the Eagles. A fantastic string of passes started initially from the amazing Fiachra playing in the unusual position of central Midfield, saw the ball pinged around the SMB players like a pinball and finally ending up at the feet of Shuwab with a tap into the City net. 1-0 the Eagles!
Not to be outdone City quickly equalized though with a straightforward run at Eagles defence, and somewhat unchallenged produced a good equalizer.
Eagles second goal came about through great determination from Nick Devine who shielding the ball well in the City box on the 6 yard line received a foul awarding Eagles a penalty which was comfortably dispatched by Lloyd. So 2-1 the Eagles!
It seemed like déjà vu though when minutes later City produced almost an identical goal to their first with a central run at the Eagles defence who still seemed a little shy to tackle and another goal went City’s way. 2-2 at this point then.
What followed was a long period of stalemate between the teams with no score for at least 25 mins.
After 5 mins of the second half though, the first of 2 subs were made for the Eagles with Liam Gawler stepping in for Zac. The change of not only personnel but also the downward slope did open up more opportunities for the Eagles in the shape of corners and it was Lloyd with a curling banana corner in by the rear post (which he will claim he meant to do!) that finally broke the stalemate and made it 3-2 the Eagles.
The second sub to central midfield in the shape of Nathan Mearns (on for Nathan H with Fi now dropping back into his preferred position of Central defence to bolster the lead) generated what is now the predictable Mearns conversion within 5 mins on the field! Nathan making it 4-2 with a fantastic shot from range sealed the deal for SMB again.
A great performance then from the whole team, and thanks to those who started and finished as subs on the day-it’s a real team effort all round!
The team line up was as follows:
N Hollingsworth (Mearns)
