Eagles Hopes of League Title Ends…

To quote an All Star United track, the recent form of the Eagles team can only be described as ‘Dude…That’s Freaking Awesome’, and so it was with high expectations that we met SKCC for the return leg of the league.

Having been beaten 4-0 last time the Eagles were now a much more mature and experienced unit, and we knew we had a good game to offer SKCC this time.

This was the second thread of three of the title shot in giving ourselves sufficient points to stand a chance of stepping into leaders SAFC’s shoes.

Frankly, we were by far and away the better team on the day, completely outplaying SKCC from the outset. The pressure we applied was simply brilliant and had SKCC wondering what had hit them.

Again the mighty presence of Fi in the middle of the park, partnered by the Velcro feet of Liam meant the game was taken to SKCC and most of the 1st half action was in their half despite the uphill topography.

It was on the stroke of 25 mins that Lloyd was able to strike home with an amazing 20 yard shot into the top corner and we were on our way!

SKCC are a great team with real pedigree though and always a threat and so it was that the second goal of the game went their way via a goal mouth tangle as the ball slipped from the keepers hands.1-1 then at this point.

The true character of SMB though has really come on recently and so the pressure remounted against SKCC and it was a superb long ball assist from Kings that produced a text book strike at the back post from Shuwab with the side of his foot-we were back to 2-1!

Half time and we were in control but now with the down hill slope in our favour we had high expectations!

We re-started as we begun, and only 10 minutes into the second half Shuwab, who is in contention for the golden boot this season found the post which might have buried the SKCC hopes for good, but again they produced the obligatory goal we are so used to seeing pulling the score back to 2-2.

With Nathan Mearns subbed on account of an unfortunate injury to his arm, it was Kes who stepped in to partner Lloyd in the attack. It was clear Kes meant business and SKCC must have been surprised at the skill of the sub and Kes converted with a superb one on one effort simply chipping past the keeper on the hoof-well done Kes!

We really thought we had it now with 10 mins to go-and maybe we should have shut up shop, but football is a funny old game and it will be the final decision of the ref that will haunt SMB.

A throw in meant for SMB was awarded to SKCC and (it must be said a great individual effort) it was from this that SKCC went on to clinch the equaliser again!

So the game ends 3-3 and the title lifeline is left to splash wildly out of our reach in the sea of our lost dreams-that’s poetry for the uneducated among you.

All in all a great game and the Eagles better by far can be very proud of themselves.

Now it’s on to the Final-see you there!
